Chalcedony is not a mineral species in its own right; it is a form of cryptocrystalline quartz.
Mentioned by Agricola (1546) of a stone named after the city of Chalcedon.
It is not a mineral but a specific arrangement of quartz crystallites. It is polycrystalline, that is to say, composed of single crystals (the crystallites) "glued" together.
Chalcedony occurs in massive, mammillated or stalactite forms. It is a very hard stone.
