A mineral collection can be organized according to different criteria: size (micro, miniature, cabinet, museum), mineral species , origin or shape of the crystals (habitus, geometry).

Some collectors are also interested in crystallization defects and rare phenomena — such as pseudomorphs , perimorphs , twins or gwindels .
