Pearls are organic gemstones produced by certain mollusks, mainly oysters and pearl mussels.
They are primarily composed of calcium carbonate, mainly in the form of aragonite (CaCO₃), associated with an organic matrix called conchiolin. Their color can be white, cream, pink, yellow, gray, silver, golden, or black, depending on the mollusk species and its environment.
We distinguish between natural pearls, saltwater cultured pearls, and freshwater cultured pearls. Their surface exhibits a characteristic luster called orient, created by the superposition of fine layers of nacre.
