Nacre is not a mineral, but a biogenic material produced by certain mollusks. It is mainly composed of aragonite (CaCO₃) and organic matter, arranged in thin layers that create its remarkable iridescent reflections.
Generally white, cream, pink, gray, or black depending on the species, nacre forms the inner layer of certain shells and is also the main component of pearls.
