The pyritized ammonite from Ulyanovsk, in Russia's Volga region, is an exceptional fossil dating back approximately 150 million years, from the Late Jurassic seas. During fossilization, the ammonite's shell was gradually replaced by pyrite, an iron sulfide with metallic golden reflections. Some specimens are also associated with magnificent crystals of yellow calcite (simbircite), creating a remarkable contrast between the metallic luster of the pyrite and the warm transparency of the calcite.
